What is dyslexia and do you need an official diagnosis?
Dyslexia is difficulty with reading, writing, and sometimes pronunciation of words due to a lack of phonological processing (associating sounds in the English language with the graphemes – letters or combinations of letters that make words).
An official diagnosis is not needed to receive my tutoring services. The Orton-Gillingham method of instruction has shown positive growth in both reading and writing for all learners. I do follow the Orton-Gillingham screening process with each student to assess what areas they need direct instruction and practice to create individualized lessons based on their needs.
What is the Orton-Gillingham approach?
- Phonemic / Morphological Awareness
- Handwriting
- Spelling
- Reading
- Writing
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
- Fluency
- Grammar
How long will my child need to have tutoring?
I will tutor your child as long as it takes based on their needs and comfort level. I will go as quickly as I can, but as slowly as needed to help each student retrain their brain to independently read and write. A person with a dyslexic brain can take anywhere from 20-100+ repetitions with a specific concept before it is truly mastered. I am an adult and I continue to work on retraining my brain as well, and I will for life. Remember, we should be lifelong learners and just like working out to stay healthy, our brains will need continued practice and use to stay in tip top shape when it comes to reading and writing.
Is tutoring in person or virtual?
Tutoring can be in person, virtual, or a combination of both depending on the student.
The initial screening process is best done in person along with the initial tutoring sessions (this number varies depending on the student). The option to continue in person or move to virtual sessions as needed will depend on the student, schedule, location, and weather (this way we can keep our session going even when mother nature decides to hit us with Wisconsin winter weather).
What is your tutoring fee?
I charge a $100 fee for the initial screening process to make sure that your student’s needs will be best addressed using the Orton-Gillingham approach. There are many reasons for struggles with reading comprehension, and we want to make sure that this specific dyslexia approach is what is best for your child.
If the results indicate that my services would be the best approach and you choose to hire me as your child’s tutor, the first two sessions will be free. Thereafter, we will schedule two sessions per week at a set time and day (there is some flexibility for make-up lessons due to illness or travel) with a cost of $60 per session for a total of $120 a week. Payments can be made with a credit card or an HSA account. All payments will be processed online.
Full time virtual tutoring will include some initial cost for additional technology supplies to ensure we can efficiently and smoothly navigate through tutoring sessions.
*Please note that if this price isn’t within your budget we can work together to find scholarships, grants, or other payment options to get your child the help they need to be successful in the areas of reading and writing.
